License Agreement
Last updated: October 14, 2026 · Between you and Gustavo Garibay, trading as Decrypt Labs, in California, USA. Questions? hello@momotako.com
The short version
- Momotako is licensed to you, not sold. You may use it to dub videos you're allowed to watch, for yourself.
- Expert works on up to 2 Macs per license. Please don't share your key or copy, resell or rebuild the app.
- Some AI models inside come with their own rules, and you agree to follow them too. The main one: never use what the models produce to train another AI model.
- Dubs play live and aren't saved. Momotako is for watching, not for copying or sharing episodes.
1. What this covers
This agreement covers the Momotako Chrome extension, the Momotako Mac app, the AI models and voices that come with them, and every update ("Momotako"). It applies to Light, Standard and Expert.
How you agree. For Light and Standard, you agree to it when you install or use Momotako. For Expert, you tick a box at checkout to agree to our Terms of Sale, Refund Policy and this agreement (including the NetEase Youdao Model Use License Agreement in section 4), and Expert asks you to agree to this agreement again when you install it and when you enter your key. Buying Expert gets you a license to use Momotako, not ownership of the software. If you don't agree, please don't install or use Momotako.
2. What you may do
- Light and Standard: you may install and use them for free, for your own personal, non-commercial use.
- Expert: with a paid license key, you may install and use Expert on up to 2 Macs that you own or control, for your own personal, non-commercial use.
- You may keep a backup copy of the installer for yourself.
3. What you may not do
- Share, sell, post or lend your license key, or use one key on more than 2 Macs.
- Copy, resell, rent, sublicense or redistribute Momotako, or any part of it (including its voices and the AI model files inside the app), except as this agreement or an included open-source licence allows.
- Remove, bypass or fake the license check, or help someone else do it.
- Take Momotako apart to rebuild or copy it (reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble it), except where the law allows this despite this agreement.
- Copy our original work, such as our app and extension code, our voice mixes, Momo the octopus, our logo and website, to make a competing product.
- Use Momotako to record, save, download or share episodes, their audio or their subtitles, or to get around a video site's paywall, copy protection or sign-in.
- Use Momotako against the terms of the video site you're watching, or for anything unlawful.
- Use Momotako to imitate a real person's voice, or to pretend a dub is official.
4. The AI models inside, and their rules
Momotako runs open AI models on your Mac. Each keeps its own licence, and the full texts ship with the app, in the licenses folder and in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt. Nothing in this agreement limits the rights an open-source licence gives you for that open-source part.
The Japanese listening model in Expert (NetEase Youdao)
Expert's "Momo listens to the Japanese" feature uses Confucius4-R2T2, made by NetEase Youdao. It comes under the NetEase Youdao Model Use License Agreement, a copy of which ships with Expert in licenses/Confucius4-R2T2/. By using Expert, you agree to follow that agreement as well. In particular, you agree:
- not to use the model, or anything it produces, to train, fine-tune or otherwise improve any other AI model;
- not to use it for medical, military, surveillance, biometric identification or other high-risk uses that agreement prohibits;
- to keep its copyright notices and licence files in place, and not to use NetEase or Youdao names or trademarks except to say where the model comes from.
The model is used unchanged, as NetEase Youdao published it. NetEase Youdao doesn't make, endorse or support Momotako.
The other models
The translators and voices in Momotako (including Index-Translate-9B, Qwen3, Qwen3-TTS and Kokoro-82M) come under open licences such as Apache License 2.0. Their makers don't make, endorse or support Momotako either.
If a model's licence changes. The AI models inside Momotako come under their makers' licences. If a licence ends or changes in a way that stops us offering a model, we may replace that model or remove the feature in an update. If that leaves Expert working materially worse than described when you bought it, email us within 30 days of that update and we'll have Paddle refund you.
5. The dubs Momotako makes
- Dubs are made on your Mac as you watch and played right away. Momotako doesn't save them.
- The episode, its story, characters and subtitles belong to their owners. A dub doesn't give you or us any rights in them, so please keep dubs to your own viewing.
- Dubs are made by AI and can be wrong. Don't rely on them for anything important.
6. What stays ours
We own Momotako, including its code, our voice mixes, the Momotako name, Momo the octopus and our website, apart from the open-source parts, which belong to their authors. This agreement gives you only the rights it states.
7. Updates and the license check
Momotako tells you when an update is ready, and you install it with one click. Expert checks your license key with momotako.com when you enter it and now and then afterwards, as our privacy page explains. Updates are covered by this agreement unless they come with new terms.
License checks. Expert keeps working offline between checks. If it can't reach momotako.com for 30 days in a row, it will ask you to go online. It never deletes anything. If we ever stop running the license check, we'll first release an update that removes it, so the version you have keeps working.
8. Ending this agreement
You can end it any time by removing Momotako. If you break it, for example by sharing your key or copying the app, your rights end and we may switch off your license key. If your Expert purchase is refunded, its key is switched off. Sections 3 to 6 and 9 to 10 still apply after the agreement ends.
9. Warranty and liability
Your consumer rights come first. If you're a consumer, the law gives you rights this agreement can't take away. In the UK and EU, for example, digital content must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, and you have a remedy if it damages your device. Nothing in this section limits those rights.
Apart from those rights, Momotako is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE". As far as the law allows, we disclaim all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don't promise that Momotako will be free of errors or interruptions, that every dub will be accurate, or that it will keep working with every video site, since sites change.
Limits. As far as the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss. Our total liability to you is limited to the price paid for your Expert license, or US$50 if you paid nothing.
What we never limit: liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, for wilful misconduct or gross negligence, or for anything else the law doesn't let us limit.
10. Everything else
- Law: this agreement is governed by the laws of the State of California, USA. Nothing here takes away rights you have under the consumer laws where you live.
- Export: please don't use Momotako where US law forbids it.
- Changes: we may update this agreement. We'll change the date at the top, and tell you in the app or by email if a change matters for a license you bought.
- Buying Expert: our Terms of Sale and refund policy cover the purchase.
